ABS 5KM CHICKEN RUN Saturday 23rd July 2016

Bespoke has teamed up with the ‘Architects Benevolent Society’ in sponsorship for this year’s ABS 5K Chicken Run, organised by Pollard Thomas Edwards Architects.

Sponsorship money raised by runners taking part adds a significant and valuable contribution to the work of the ABS. Just imagine, if 200 runners were sponsored £100 each to run this race, that would raise £20,000 which the ABS could use to support those in the wider architectural profession in their time of greatest need.

Sign up HERE!

The Charity
The Society was set up in 1850 by leading architects to help colleagues and their dependents in times of need.  Today, the charity helps architects, assistants, technologists, technicians, landscape architects and their families. The charity support people of all ages who have experienced illness, accident, redundancy, unemployment, bereavement or other personal difficulties. The support ranges from confidential advice to financial assistance.

Last year, the Society helped over 700 individuals across the UK and are pleased that over 50 beneficiaries, along with their dependents, no longer need assistance as they are managing on their own. This means the society can take on new cases and provide support where it is most needed. The ABS needs to raise money to fund the valuable support we provide to the architectural profession in times of need.

BIMnet is hosting a series of events that will focus on topics which aim to bring together thoughts and requirements that look past the mandate and will try to focus on real word BIM implementation, lessons learnt and examples where real benefit has been achieved. 2016 has seen the arrival of the Government BIM Mandate… So what does that mean!? What have we achieved? How far have we gone? All this before we get excited or possibly scared about BIM Level 3!… what have we achieved with respect to delivering BIM Level 2?

Early adopters are using new software tools and PAS control documents to produce ever more collaborated models with ever increasing Levels of Detail and Information in accordance with Employers Information Requirements. What is the reality of this step change currently happening around us? How are the changes to our workflows and outputs impacting our AEC industry? Is BIM delivering the time and cost savings? Are we reducing carbon and are assets delivering better for end users?

BIMnet hopes to explore and challenge progress, support Design, Build, Construct and Operate professionals by providing a series of sessions designed to inform and allow insights into real world BIM implementation on real world projects.

Speakers:
Michael Johnson – Senior BIM Consultant @ Plowman Craven

Paul Thorpe – BIM/VDC Coordinator @ Brookfield Multiplex Construction Europe Ltd.

Shaun Farrell – Associate Director, Technology @ BIM at Turner & Townsend

Bespoke are leaders in placing BIM professionals globally. Bespoke is a founding partner of BIMnet and hosts the events.  BIMnet brings together key players in the market, facilitating learning through our speakers, and helping individuals and companies generate mutual opportunities.

BIM is changing the landscape of the construction industry at an ever increasing rate. Its adoption involves inherently different ways of working and conceptualising projects by all those involved in the process. We are beginning to see BIM being used across all phases of a project: from early concept design, the production and management of construction information, through to O&M manuals and end-user facilities management.

As adoption has increased, so has the perceived scope of what can be achieved in an BIM environment. BIMnet began in 2012 and was so successful in its first year it was finalist for Building Magazine’s ‘BIM initiative of the year’. Register to attend the next BIMnet event and see all past presentations here

Black, white and all colours of the rainbow - Salone you were on fire!

With just enough time for her feet to touch the ground from MIPIM, Olivia accompanied our Sales & Suppler Consultant, Melinda and Interiors Team Leader, Sukie for furniture’s 55th annual extravaganza, Salone del mobile.

Given that the Salone is part of Milan Design week - where all the design districts across Milan host events - we knew that we were in for more than just a feast in furniture but also architecture. With that in mind, it was apt that we started our journey on a platform at Grimshaw’s refurbished London Bridge station.

Once settled in the Airbnb we ventured out - our first stop being Tom Dixon’s showcase at the Rotunda della Besana –  this year Tom Dixon teamed up with Wallpaper and Caesarstone to create ‘The Restaurant’, which for the week was set in its stunning baroque headquarters.  Entwined with Tom Dixon’s incredible furniture and lighting, Ceaserstone had hand crafted cooking situations amongst a series of geometrical marble marvels.

Later that evening we were lucky enough to be invited along to the now legendary evening event. We knew we were in for a treat, as the event last year, hosted in a redundant cinema, was epic! This year the guestlist was made up of over 2000 names - If your name wasn’t down, you literally weren’t getting in.

Once inside we saw the space come alive with atmospheric lighting and music from Horsemeat Disco and Tom’s band, Rough. We were treated to ginger and burnt orange whiskies, black cakes, white meringues, almond granita and dark dark chocolate.

We had a fabulous time, thank you to Tom Dixon and the team for having us.

An honourable mention has to go to Lee Broom’s lovely lorry - another fantastic concept, Lee drove his mini showroom around Milan all week – GENIUS we say!

Day 2 we split up, with Sukie and Melinda heading to Brera to check out the showrooms and meet clients for lunch and Olivia heading to The Fiera! Designed by Massimiliano Fuksas and at 2.5M sqft of exhibition space there is no better venue to showcase thousands of stunning pieces from the furniture world.

Weaving through various man bags and massive sunglasses here are some favourites from Arper, Zanotta and OFFECT:

A favourite stand was Cassina equipped with an architectural model

Our Stand out chair was Vitra’s APC (all plastic chair designed by Jasper Morrison - available 2017), not only showcased at the Fiera but also at their exhibit “Casa Vitra” in borrowed space Spazio Edit.

Seeing Zaha’s Planter at Serralunga’s stand and Vitra’s sensations reminded us that Zaha Hadid’s Fire Station was her first completed building…

Later that evening we were joined by clients to toast what was a fabulous few days of furniture with Aperols and Negronis at the much famed Bar Basso. I think that the photos speak for themselves -  this really was the place to be for who’s who in the world that is furniture.
