The Waterhouse Lecture is held every two years in honour of the Victorian architect Alfred Waterhouse. The 2026 lecture will be delivered by Nicholas Olsberg and examines the work and legacy of the architect William Butterfield. The event takes place in the Church of St Cross in Clayton, the only church Butterfield designed in the North West of England.
Butterfield emerged as a central figure within the Gothic Revival and was closely associated with the Ecclesiological movement. His work responded to the religious and social transformations of nineteenth century Britain and was characterised by the use of polychrome brickwork and disciplined structural expression. Olsberg’s lecture draws on his recent research to explore how Butterfield’s architecture engaged with institutional growth, moral reform and the changing character of Victorian society.
