The Festival of Architecture and Design (FAD) is South Australia’s annual celebration of great buildings and the minds behind them. Run each October by the Australian Institute of Architects SA Chapter, FAD brings together open buildings, public talks, design installations, and community events that make the world of architecture accessible to everyone — whether you are a seasoned practitioner or simply someone who loves the city they live in.
The festival takes place across multiple Adelaide venues, with participating buildings ranging from landmark heritage structures and major public institutions to newer residential and commercial projects. Open building events allow visitors to explore spaces normally closed to the public, often with the architects on hand to discuss the design intent, materials, and challenges that shaped each project.
For built environment professionals, FAD is a key moment in the South Australian calendar — a chance to engage with clients and communities, showcase recent work, and participate in a public conversation about the value of good design.
