Modernist Society: Technical Tours Manchester
Architect-led monthly tours of Manchester's brutalist and mid-century buildings offer close-up access to structures currently undergoing conservation and restoration.
Location: Various venues, Manchester
Date: Monthly throughout 2026
The Modernist Society’s Technical Tours programme offers monthly architect-led walkthroughs of Manchester’s significant brutalist and mid-century buildings, with a particular focus in 2026 on assets currently undergoing conservation, restoration or adaptation. The tours are designed for architecture professionals rather than general visitors, with access to areas and technical information not available on public tours, and discussion led by architects and engineers directly involved in the works.
Manchester holds one of the UK’s most substantial concentrations of post-war modernist architecture, including structures by architects of national and international significance. Many of these buildings are now at a critical point in their life cycle, facing decisions about their future that will define the city’s built fabric for the next generation. The Modernist Society’s tours place professionals in direct contact with the people making those decisions.
Tours run monthly and cover different buildings and sites throughout the year. For architects working in the heritage and conservation sector, or those with a broader interest in how mid-century buildings are being adapted for contemporary use, the programme is one of the better professional development opportunities available in the North West.
