State of Design: Brisbane Symposium 2026
A critical forum at the State Library of Queensland examining urban design and social equity, tailored for architects navigating Brisbane's rapid densification.
Location: State Library of Queensland, Brisbane
Date: September 2026
The State of Design: Brisbane Symposium takes place at the State Library of Queensland in September, convening architects, urban designers, planners and social researchers to examine the intersection of urban design and social equity in one of Australia’s fastest-growing cities. The symposium is framed specifically around the professional obligations and practical challenges facing architects working in the context of Brisbane’s accelerating densification.
Brisbane is undergoing a period of transformation unprecedented in its recent history, with significant uplift in residential density, infrastructure investment and urban renewal programmes all converging ahead of the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The symposium interrogates how design practice can engage meaningfully with the social dimensions of that change, rather than simply responding to commercial and regulatory pressures.
The State Library of Queensland’s South Bank setting gives the symposium a civic quality appropriate to its subject. For design professionals working in Queensland, the event offers one of the more substantive annual opportunities to think collectively about what the profession’s contribution to Brisbane’s transformation should look like over the next decade.
