UCLA AUD Spring 2026: Mark Lee
Mark Lee, founding principal of Johnston Marklee, delivers a lecture at UCLA Architecture and Urban Design as part of the AUD60 Celebration series.
Part of the AUD60 Celebration — marking 60 years of UCLA Architecture and Urban Design. Rescheduled from 13 April 2026.
The AUD60 Celebration at UCLA Architecture and Urban Design continues with a public lecture by Mark Lee, co-principal of Los Angeles–based practice Johnston Marklee. Rescheduled from its original April date, the talk forms part of a broader programme marking sixty years of the department — bringing together leading voices from practice, academia and criticism to reflect on the past and future of architectural culture.
Mark Lee co-founded Johnston Marklee in 1998 alongside Sharon Johnston. The practice has earned international recognition for work that engages with history, material culture and the everyday environment. Lee has received over 50 awards for design and teaching, and has served as Chair of the Department of Architecture at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, where he has been a faculty member since 2014.
Among Johnston Marklee’s most celebrated projects are the Menil Drawing Institute in Houston — the firm’s first purpose-built museum — and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago renovation. The practice’s work operates across scales, from intimate residential commissions to major cultural institutions, consistently exploring questions of context, memory and architectural language.
