UT Austin Materials Lab: INCOMBUSTIBLE
A technical exhibition at UT Austin's School of Architecture cataloguing fire-resistant materials and construction tactics that minimise reliance on chemical additives.
Location: Materials Lab, WMB 3.100, UT Austin School of Architecture
Date: On view through May 2026
INCOMBUSTIBLE is an ongoing technical exhibition at the University of Texas at Austin’s School of Architecture Materials Lab, cataloguing a comprehensive range of fire-resistant construction materials and the tactics available to architects for incorporating passive fire resistance into projects without relying on chemical fire retardants or additive-based systems. The exhibition is part of the school’s broader research programme into material performance and specification.
The project addresses a growing concern in architectural practice, particularly in wildfire-prone regions of the American West, where the relationship between building materials and fire spread is increasingly shaping both code requirements and professional responsibility. The materials on display are presented with technical data on fire behaviour, sourcing, installation and long-term performance, making the exhibition a practical reference as much as a research showcase.
For architects and specifiers working on projects in Texas, California or other fire-exposed contexts, the UT Austin Materials Lab provides a rare opportunity to examine fire-resistant material assemblies in person, with access to the research team’s findings and methodology. The exhibition remains on view through May 2026.
