The New York A&D recruitment market remains busy with firms optimistic

2020 Global Salary Guide

In New York, the A&D market remains busy with firms optimistic and steady growth likely to continue for the foreseeable future. Talent shortages remain a common factor, with competing firms needing to differentiate themselves in order to attract candidates and also consider hiring a broader, more diverse talent pool.

The commercial and workplace sector remains busy, with firms looking to hire across the board with designers, architects and projects managers all sought-after in this fast-paced, design to delivery sector.  We have also witness increased demand for marketing professionals

New York City’s commitment to taking action on climate change saw the announcement of the NYC Green New Deal last year and as a result, specialists in façade design and sustainability are likely to be in demand throughout the year to drive forward associated projects and policies. The policies announced will drive higher energy efficiencies and lower emissions in both new and existing buildings as well as investment in large scale resilience planning and urban planning projects.

Long-term projects of continued accessibility improvements to the MTA, improvements to Penn Station and the Port Authority’s investment in NY and NJ airports mean that project managers and delivery architects will continue to be in demand. The multi-family residential sector also shows no sign of slowing despite land values and construction costs continuing to rise.  As the talent pool continues to tighten, we are witnessing salary uplifts across the board.

BIM savvy candidates continue to remain in real demand and those specialists with experience of BIM management and BIM coordination on large scale projects are particularly sought-after.  As firms look to improve efficiencies throughout their design and delivery processes, technology experts have also become an increasingly popular specialism.

We also continue to see a real drive for improved diversity in the industry, particularly in leadership roles, plus a desire from candidates to improve their work/life balance, making these key focuses for businesses. As a result of heightened competition for the very best candidates, firms have sought to review their benefits packages.

Demand for talent will continue to be fierce and the ability to find and attract the very best will be crucial. Employers will need to make their positions highly attractive for job seekers. Whether that’s flexible hours, increased compensation, bonus potential, creative benefits, enhanced vacation time or other perks.
