March & White, New York: Holistic, Innovative, Unique.

The Culture of Practice

March & White is an international architecture andinterior design house with studios in London, New York and Los Angeles. Being aEuropean practice in New York has many horizon-broadening benefits. The vibrantThompson Street studio, which opened in 2016, acts as a crucible for fusingthat combined cultural knowledge, creating design alchemy in the process. “It’sa cross-pollinating situation that we think is both productive and intellectuallystimulating,” says Co-Founder Elliot March.

The  firm is defined by an ‘off the leash’ culture, in which every person is givenas much slack as they can handle. There are no barriers structurally either, sothemost senior person in the office is sitting next to the most junior. Havingthat closeness of sitting altogether in a shared space is highly productive forthe younger members of staff to learn quickly. There is currently a staff ofsix in the New York office, but that is set to double as the firm continues towin some of the biggest projects in the city.

The firm bringseveryone together for ‘Peroni Thursdays’ which is a good chance to socialiseand interact. They’ve also got a big art-based programme so every month they goto see a new exhibition together as a company. Every other Friday, a collectiveconference takes place between the London, New York and LA studio to sharedesign ideas and projects. “That allows us to share what’s going on in each ofthe cities so we become a joined up collective with the 35 people in London. You feel part of a bigger organisation,” comments March. They offer two-weeksabbaticals between the three cities, which allows the different work culturesto feed into one another and share in a broader culture.

What sets March &White apart is its dual focus on architecture and interior design. Combiningthese two disciplines, with a laser focus on how to craft engineered space, creates a uniquely holistic learning experience that intertwines yachting andresidential design.
