People-Centered Architecture Lecture 2026

The People-Centered Architecture Lecture, presented on 29 April as part of AIA DC’s Architecture Month programme, examines the methodology and practice of human-centric design in large-scale institutional projects. The lecture brings a practitioner of significant standing to the District Architecture Center to discuss how the priorities, behaviours and needs of building users can be embedded into the design process from the earliest stages of a project rather than addressed as a secondary consideration during delivery.

The subject is particularly relevant in Washington DC’s institutional context, where a high proportion of the city’s built output involves federal buildings, embassies, cultural institutions, healthcare facilities and educational campuses. These project types all require architects to engage rigorously with complex user communities whose needs may be difficult to aggregate into a coherent design brief without a systematic methodology.

The lecture is part of a broader Architecture Month commitment to examining architecture’s social responsibilities alongside its formal and technical dimensions.
