Ultimo is one of Sydney’s most architecturally layered suburbs — a place where colonial-era warehouses, Victorian terraces, mid-century civic buildings, and bold contemporary insertions exist in close and often fascinating proximity. The Ultimo Architecture as Art Walk, run by the Australian Institute of Architects, guides participants through this rich urban fabric, drawing out the stories behind the buildings and exploring how successive generations of architects and planners have shaped the character of this inner-city neighbourhood.
Starting from The Q on Harris, the walk moves through streets that have witnessed Ultimo’s remarkable transformation from an industrial and working-class district to a hub for education, media, and creative industries. Along the way, guides point to moments of architectural ambition and restraint, successful urban renewal and the tensions that come with rapid change — making it as much a conversation about cities as it is about individual buildings.
These walks are run by the Australian Institute of Architects and are suitable for practitioners, students, and architecture enthusiasts alike. Numbers are typically limited, so early booking via the AIA website is recommended.
