Delirious New Lynn: Walking Tour with Oscar Mardell

A $10 walking tour of New Lynn's everyday architecture with writer Oscar Mardell, run by Objectspace on the closing weekend of In the Image of the City

Location: New Lynn train station, 2 Clark Street, New Lynn, Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland

Date: 14 November 2026, from 10.30am

Objectspace takes its programme offsite on Saturday 14 November 2026 for a walking tour of New Lynn in west Auckland led by writer and educator Oscar Mardell. The group meets outside New Lynn train station on Clark Street at 10.30am and sets off at 10.45am, with the tour running to about 12pm. Tickets are $10 through Eventbrite.

Mardell is the author of Delirious New Lynn, an eccentric guidebook to his home suburb, and the tour follows its approach, a slow walk with deliberately tongue-in-cheek commentary on everyday places. Stops named on the event page include the library, the Brick Maker’s Memorial and a gatepost at the corner of Clark Street and Rankin Avenue. The walk coincides with the closing weekend of In the Image of the City at Objectspace.

It’s a counterpoint to the usual tour of award winners, looking instead at the suburban fabric most architects drive past. For anyone working on Auckland’s town centres and transport-led development, New Lynn is a useful case study, and this is a cheap and informal way to walk it.
